Sermorelin
Growth Hormone-Releasing Hormone (1-29)
The original GH-releasing peptide - FDA-approved since 1997
Sermorelin is a synthetic analog of GHRH that stimulates natural growth hormone production from the pituitary. One of the few peptides with FDA approval history.

Overview
Sermorelin is the biologically active fragment (amino acids 1-29) of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), which is naturally produced by the hypothalamus. It was FDA-approved in 1997 under the brand name Geref for diagnosing and treating growth hormone deficiency in children. Although the brand product was discontinued in 2008, compounded sermorelin remains one of the most prescribed peptides in anti-aging medicine.
⚙️How it works
Binds to GHRH receptors on the anterior pituitary gland, stimulating the synthesis and secretion of growth hormone. Unlike exogenous HGH, sermorelin maintains the body's natural feedback loops - the pituitary still regulates GH release through somatostatin, preventing supraphysiological spikes. This makes it a 'gentler' approach to GH optimization.

FDA approves Geref (sermorelin) for paediatric growth hormone deficiency
Geref discontinued by manufacturer for commercial reasons
Compounded sermorelin becomes staple of anti-aging clinics
Remains one of the most prescribed GH-stimulating peptides globally
Sermorelin vs HGH
The key advantage of sermorelin over direct HGH injection is that it works through the body's natural regulatory system. HGH injections bypass the pituitary entirely, which can lead to desensitisation and dependency. Sermorelin stimulates your own pituitary to produce GH, maintaining normal feedback mechanisms. However, if the pituitary is significantly damaged or aged, sermorelin may be less effective.
Why was Geref discontinued?
Sermorelin (Geref) was not discontinued due to safety concerns. The manufacturer (EMD Serono) stopped production for commercial reasons - the product had limited market share due to the availability of direct HGH. Compounding pharmacies continue to produce sermorelin, and it remains one of the most commonly prescribed peptides in longevity clinics.
